Occoquan

Occoquan

The name Occoquan elicits a rich history. It is derived from a word used by the Algonquian natives meaning “at the end of the water.” The Occoquan River played a significant role for both its native inhabitants and British colonists. The river was integral in transportation and trade, and allowed for the establishment of gristmills and warehouses along its banks.

Today, the Occoquan community boasts boat docks and art galleries. Head to the river in the spring for weekend regattas. Occoquan Regional Park is a wonderful, 400-acre space where visitors can explore the river and the wildlife on well maintained hiking trails. The Occoquan Water Trail is a nationally recognized trail.

I-95 and Route 123 are the main arteries servicing the Occoquan community.
