Aldie is a small community located roughly 1-½ hours west of Washington, D.C. Historic Aldie is more rural village than suburban neighborhood. Its beginnings were as a modest mill town. It is a true “crossroad community.” Aldie is representative of the extensive trading network that allowed colonies like Virginia to flourish. From west to east, Route 50 eventually becomes Route 236 (Little River Turnpike), which runs into the City of Alexandria.
Aldie encompasses much more area than indicated on a map. Aldie’s historic district is just one facet of a much more expansive community. Large tracts of land, typical of locales in Virginia piedmont region, can be found in the western, and northwestern parts of the community. Heading east, Aldie also includes the sprawling neighborhood of Stone Ridge.
Aldie is home to three very notable landmarks, which are the Aldie Mill Historic District, the Loudoun Agricultural and Mechanical Institute and the Mount Zion Baptist Church.
Aldie hosts two annual festivals. In October they have the Harvest Festival. This includes pumpkin patches, apple picking, face painting, and much more. In May, the Treasures on the Turnpike event are held. This is when unwanted “treasures” are sold. Visitors and residents have an opportunity to discover a diamond in the ruff at Treasures on the Turnpike.
